Bodda Getta Brew 3/7: The Shohei Otani of the SEC

Auburn baseball legend Tim Hudson inducted into the 2025 Georgia Sports Hall of Fame

Good Morning, Auburn Family. Speaking to attendees at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame banquet, Class of 2025 inductee Tim Hudson sailed through his speech until he looked at his family seated nearby.

That’s when, as the Southern saying goes, his eyeballs started to sweat.

“That meant everything for me, for them to be a part of it,” said Hudson of the Feb. 22 ceremony in Macon, Georgia.

The Columbus, Georgia, native arrived on the Plains 30 years ago and left two years later, after the finest season in Auburn history: A 15-2 record with a 2.97 ERA and 165 strikeouts while also hitting 18 home runs with a .396 batting average and 95 runs batted in while leading the Tigers to the College World Series.

Drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the sixth round, Hudson zoomed through the minor leagues and pitched 17 seasons in the big leagues, including nine with the Atlanta Braves. A 222-game winner, Hudson helped San Francisco win the 2014 World Series.

🔼 All Hail. Auburn All-American Johni Broome was one of five finalists for the 2025 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award. He was joined on the list by Michigan’s Danny Wolf, Texas Tech’s JT Toppin, UAB’s Yaxel Lendeborg and Villanova’s Eric Dixon.

One of the front runners for National Player of the Year honors, Broome recently became the fourth player in NCAA Division I men’s basketball history to score 2,500 career points and pull down 1,500 career rebounds, joining Houston’s Elvin Hayes (1965-68), Elgin Baylor of Seattle (1954-58) and Wake Forest’s Dickie Hemric (1951-55).

🔼 From the Plains to the Reign. After an outstanding five-year career on The Plains, Auburn soccer’s Maddie Prohaska becomes the latest Tiger to join the professional ranks as she signs a one-year contract with three-time NWSL shield winners, The Seattle Reign. Prohaska joins Alyssa Malonson of Bay FC as the second active former Tiger in the NWSL.

Prohaska takes her talents to Seattle after a dynamic final season in the Orange & Blue, leading the Auburn defense to a whopping 12 clean sheets, which matched the 21-year-old program record.

Returning to Plainsman Park after four straight away games, No. 20 Auburn (11-2) hosts Old Dominion (3-7) in its final non-conference series this weekend. First pitches are scheduled for this evening at 6 p.m. CT, Saturday at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

The team is 8-1 and outscoring opponents 79-32 at Plainsman Park this season. Auburn has 13 or more hits in four straight home games and is hitting .412 with seven doubles and 10 home runs during the span.

🔼 Have Horses, Will Travel. The No. 1 Auburn equestrian team is back on the road this weekend as the Tigers take on No. 2 SMU and No. 4 Texas A&M to close out the 2024-25 regular season.

Auburn (10-1, 4-1 SEC) will open its Texas trip in Dallas, facing SMU this morning at 10 a.m. CT. The Tigers will then make their way down to Bryan-College Station and take on the Aggies in a final SEC regular season showdown on Saturday, March 8, at 12 p.m. CT.

🔼 Tough Tennis Ahead. No. 11 Women’s tennis will face both Texas schools in the SEC over the weekend at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. Auburn will host defending national champion No. 3 Texas A&M tonight at 5 p.m. CT before facing No. 9 Texas on Sunday at noon CT.

Auburn will enter this evening’s match with a 12-3 overall record and a 1-2 record in SEC play. The Tigers will face their sixth and seventh team ranked inside the ITA top 10 this season, as they already have three on their record over No. 3 Oklahoma State, No. 4 Stanford and No. 8 North Carolina.

🔼 Sprinting Sensation. Auburn track & field sophomore Ja’Kobe Tharp remains on the prestigious Pre-Indoor Nationals Bowerman Watch List—his third time doing so during the 2025 season.

Last weekend, Tharp competed in his first SEC Indoor Championships at the R.A. “Murray” Fasken ‘38 Indoor Track & Field facility in Bryan-College Station, Texas, where he broke his own record in the 60m hurdles to take the SEC title (7.48). Tharp posted to eighth fastest collegiate time ever and broke the facility record in the process, bringing home Auburn’s first gold in the event since Ty Akins won in 2008.

🐅 ONE BIG THING

“Moore” Than a Hooper. In a continuing effort to recognize the accomplishments of student-athletes beyond the field of competition, graduate senior forward Chris Moore was recognized on the SEC Community Service Team for MBB for the 2024-25 season.

Moore and his teammates participated in Serve Day in the fall, where the group transformed a widow’s dilapidated abode into a livable home. The Tigers also brought smiles to pediatric cancer patients during their visits to Arthur M. Blank Hospital – Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, prior to playing Ohio State at Holiday Hoopsgiving as well as Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham, prior to playing Purdue at the Battle in Birmingham.
