Bodda Getta Brew 3/19: It's Time to Talk About Johni
Auburn MBB's Johni Broome (whose named pronunciation we discuss) has been named one of five players honored on the AP All-America First Team.
Good Morning, Auburn Family. As he’s assured his spot in G.O.A.T. territory, it may be time to know how to pronounce Auburn MBB phenom Johni Broome’s name.
"It's John-i,” his mother told the Montgomery Advertiser back in January. “When you say it together, it's just John-i. ... I think, sometimes, people put too much emphasis on it, or it's just where they're from or how their accent is. But it's not Johnny.”
Broome, on the other hand, is pronounced just how you’d expect. 🧹
Now that we’ve taken care of that, we can announce that the hooper has been named one of five players honored on the Associated Press All-America First Team. The SEC Player of the Year and All-SEC First Team selection was joined by Cooper Flagg of Duke, Braden Smith of Purdue, Mark Sears of Alabama and Walter Clayton Jr. of Florida.

🔼 Three Hundo For Coach. Head coach Butch Thompson secured his 300th win in an Auburn uniform as the No. 16 Tigers defeated Alabama State 13-9 Tuesday night at Plainsman Park. Thompson becomes the third coach in program history to surpass the 300-win milestone, joining Paul Nix and Hal Baird on the short list.
Auburn (17-4) scored in seven of eight innings at the plate with all nine hitters in the lineup recorded a hit and scored a run and seven of the nine driving in a run. Lucas Steele hit a grand slam in the fourth inning to give Auburn the lead for good, marking his second home run and four-RBI effort in the last three games.
“Just special,” Thompson said of the win.

🔼 Pearl’s Peer Props. Auburn head MBB coach Bruce Pearl was honored by his peers as the 2024-25 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division I All-Southeast District Coach of the Year. The All-District honors are voted on by NABC-member coaches across NCAA Division I.
All-SEC selections Johni Broome (SEC Player of the Year and SEC First Team) and Chad Baker-Mazara (SEC Third Team) earned a spot on the NABC All-Southeast District First Team, while teammates Chaney Johnson and Tahaad Pettiford (SEC All-Freshman Team) were honored on the Second Team.

🔼 All Roads Lead to Federal Way. Well, really, all waterways have led to Federal Way, Washington, as Ryan Wochomurka and the Auburn Tigers are set for the 2025 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships. The championships are slated for March 19-22, beginning with the 200 medley and 800 free relays this evening. The meet will be streamed live on ESPN Plus all week long and live results will be available through Meet Mobile.
Auburn’s mix of veterans and underclassmen has propelled the Orange and Blue all season long. Of the 15 top-10 swims and dives this season, 11 have come from freshmen or sophomores.

🔼 This Team Rolls Deep. Nine Tigers have received All-America honors after successful performances at the 2025 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The men finished third overall, their second consecutive trophy after finishing second at 2024 Outdoors, and the women were 46th.
The top 8 individual finishers and relay teams in their respective events took home First-Team All-America honors and the individuals and relays who placed ninth through 16th earned Second-Team All-America.
