Bodda Getta Brew 2/13: Broome = Big Man On Campus

Auburn All-American Johni Broome is on the 2024-25 Men’s Late Midseason Top 20 Watch List for The Los Angeles Athletic Club’s John R. Wooden Award®.

Good Morning, Auburn Family. Auburn All-American forward/center Johni Broome is on the 2024-25 Men’s Late Midseason Top 20 Watch List for The Los Angeles Athletic Club’s John R. Wooden Award®. One of the front runners for multiple national awards this season, Broome is averaging a team-leading 18.1 points, 10.7 rebounds, 2.7 blocks and 3.3 assists per game for the No. 1-ranked Tigers (22-2, 10-1 SEC).

Broome, Omier Norchad of Baylor, Hunter Dickinson of Kansas and Ryan Kalkbrenner of Creighton are the only active NCAA Division I players with 2,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. However, the senior big man is the only player with 2,000 career points, 1,000 career points and 400 career blocks.

🔼 What a Relief. Relief pitchers John Armstrong (his second recognition after making the 2023 list) and Hayden Murphy (his first recognition) have been named to the preseason watch list for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in college baseball. The SEC was the most represented league in the country, and Auburn was just one of two SEC programs with multiple players on the list.

Entering his senior season, Armstrong leads all Auburn pitchers and ranks fifth among active SEC pitchers with 60 career appearances. Murphy came on strong at the end of his sophomore season in 2024, finishing a game in each of the team’s last two series, including earning a save in the series-clinching win against Alabama.

🔼 No Rest For the Weary. After going undefeated at the Tiger Invitational to start the 2025 campaign, Auburn softball (5-0) gears up for six games over four days during the Shriners Children's Clearwater Invitational in Clearwater, Florida.

Auburn opens its six-game slate on Thursday facing Clemson (3-2), with first pitch on ESPN2 is set for 3 p.m. CT. The Tigers’ second showdown on ESPN2 is set for Friday morning as Auburn takes on its third ACC foe of 2025 in Virginia (3-2) at 9 a.m. CT. Friday’s action concludes at 2:30 p.m. CT when the Tigers face UCF (5-1).

The Tigers have another doubleheader set for Saturday. The afternoon kicks off at 12 p.m. CT versus Charlotte (2-3). Auburn follows the contest with its first ranked opponent of the season in No. 9 Oklahoma State (2-2). First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. CT. Sunday’s finale is set for 11 a.m. CT with Auburn taking on Liberty (5-0).

🔼 Hard Knox Life. The Auburn women’s basketball team continues its stretch of four road games out of five tonight when the Tigers travel to Knoxville, Tennessee, to take on the 15th-ranked Lady Vols. Game time is 5:30 p.m. CT.

The Tigers (12-12, 3-8 SEC) came so close to picking up that elusive SEC road win Monday night, fighting back from a double-digit deficit to take a late lead before eventually falling at No. 16 Oklahoma, 73-71.

⛹🏽‍♀️ : SCOUTING REPORT

🔼 Billy THE Kid. After an outstanding showing as the Tigers’ individual player at the 2025 Amer Ari Invitational, Auburn rookie Billy Davis was named SEC Co-Freshman of the Week—the second Freshman of the Week nod in the young career of Davis. He shares this week’s honor with Arkansas’ Erich Fortlage.

Davis set a new career low by eight strokes at the Amer Ari, shooting 65-73-65 to finish just outside the top 10 at 13-under-par. His first and final round scorecards came without blemishes as he made 12 birdies, one eagle and 23 pars. He added four more birdies in Friday’s second round to bring his yearly total to 46.
