Bodda Getta Daily Brew 11/8: Bodda Getta Bowl Game

Today, Coach Freeze discusses the swagger Auburn needs to become bowl-eligible.

Good morning. In Coach Freeze’s recent presser on the upcoming SEC road trip for the game against Arkansas, he praised the “confidence and swagger” he’s seen from the squad in the last couple of weeks. In looking back at Saturday's win at Vanderbilt, Auburn did a lot of things well, but he was quick to point out they weren’t flawless.

“There were some signs of some good things, and we need to clean up the things that are not so good,” Freeze said, noting the two TDs that were called back in the game against Vandy.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Crouch, Cats, and the Upcoming Clash. The No. 24 Auburn Tigers (18-5, 8-4) are finally back on The Plains, hosting the No. 13 Kentucky Wildcats (13-7, 11-1) tonight (Wednesday, Nov. 8) at 6:30 p.m. CT.

The Tigers came in at No. 24 in the latest AVCA/TARAFLEX Coaches Poll, marking the 10th straight week Auburn has appeared in the Top 25.

Wednesday's match will also signal the second top-25 matchup in Neville Arena history. The Tigers went toe-to-toe with then-No. 3 Florida in a dramatic five-set thriller back on Sept. 22 of this year.

Speaking of five sets, head coach Brent Crouch's teams have seen remarkable success when going the distance. This season, the Orange and Blue are 5-1 in five-set matches and 11-4 over the last two seasons. Crouch is 14-10 since arriving on The Plains and 41-32 over the course of his career.

There’s no doubt Crouch and this team of warriors have something to prove, as Kentucky enters the matchup with a 48-10 record and has won each of the last 21 contests. A win over the Wildcats would be the first since 2010.

Make sure to watch the postgame press conference after the volleyball game on WarEagle+.

🔼 Spring Forward, Fall Back. As the 2024 season of Auburn gymnastics kicks off in January, it’s time to get to know the 10 newcomers to the squad. Next up is freshman Julianne Huff!

Here are some hot takes on Huff’s life before Auburn:

Five-time Development Program National Championship qualifier … Took third on floor at the 2023 meet … Finished second in the all-around, vault, and floor at the 2022 meet and came in third in the all-around in 2021 … Competed at the 2023 Nastia Liukin Cup … Three-time Region 8 Level 10 All-Around Champion … 2023 Region 8 Level 10 Beam Champion and runner-up on vault, floor and all-around

Some other quick hits on Huff:

  • Why Auburn? “I have been an Auburn fan my whole life, but I didn't always know I was coming here. Everyone is so welcoming and supportive here. It was the only school where I truly felt like everyone wanted the best for me."

  • Favorite Event—Floor

  • Most Looking Forward to at Auburn: "I'm looking forward to my first meet in Neville Arena. Ever since I committed to Auburn, I have dreamed of my first meet here.”

  • On the Bucket List: "Getting a 10.0 on floor is at the top of my bucket list."

🔼 Now, Onto Neville. The only SEC team to tip off the season against a ranked opponent, Auburn led No. 20 Baylor for most of the game until the Bears took control down the stretch to defeat the Tigers 88-82 Tuesday at Sanford Pentagon.

In his Auburn debut, freshman point guard Aden Holloway led the Tigers with 19 points and six assists. Johni Broome scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and Denver Jones added 13 in his first Auburn game.

Auburn forced 11 turnovers in the half and blocked five shots, leading to a 10-2 lead in fastbreak points and a 14-6 edge in points off turnovers. Cardwell finished with half of Auburn's 10 blocked shots.

Unfortunately, Baylor outrebounded the Tigers 21-16 in the half, including a 9-4 advantage in offensive rebounds and outscored Auburn 6-2 in second-chance points. Auburn outrebounded Baylor in the second half to even that category at 38-38.

The Tigers (0-1) play their home opener Friday at 7 p.m. CT vs. Southeastern Louisiana at Neville Arena in the Tipoff on The Plains.
