Bodda Getta Daily Brew 3/4: Baby You Were Born to Run

Auburn hoops' Broome says it's "time to make a run" after Saturday's big win over Mississippi State

"Coach always says this is the time to get hot; it's time to make a run," Broome said.

"A good win against a good team. Mississippi State, it's like a second-round NCAA Tournament game," Coach Bruce Pearl said.

Auburn (22-7, 11-5) plays its final regular season road game Tuesday at 8 p.m. CT at Missouri on SEC Network and the Auburn Sports Network.

"It's March, and it's time to make shots, not take shots," Pearl said. "The guys have been putting in the work, and that's what it takes to win."

🔼 Securing the Seven Seed. Mar'Shaun Bostic put together one of the best all-around games of her career, and Auburn held on in a wild finish for a 77-74 win at Florida on the final day of the regular season.

"I think it's her focus," head coach Johnnie Harris said of Bostic's play of late. "The thing Mar'Shaun wanted to work on was to be more focused, and she's been more focused in practice, in film sessions and coming off the bench."

Leading by three with 6.2 seconds to play, Honesty Scott-Grayson missed the second of two free throws. Florida got the rebound, raced the length of the court, and launched a desperation 3-point attempt, but Scott-Grayson blocked the shot from behind as time expired to secure the win.

The Tigers will be the No. 7 seed in this week's SEC Women's Basketball Tournament in Greenville, South Carolina. Auburn will face Arkansas in the SEC Tournament second round at 5 p.m. CT/6 p.m. ET Thursday in Greenville, S.C.

🔼 Be Like Ike. Ike Irish turned in his first career multi-homer game to lead No. 14 Auburn to an 8-2 win against UConn in the rubber game of the series Sunday afternoon at Plainsman Park.

"A series win against a great opponent, this was a great test for us and really revealed some areas where we need to continue to grow and work," head coach Butch Thompson said.

Irish went 3-for-3 in his last three at-bats, including a pair of two-out, two-run homers in his last two trips to the plate to extend the lead from two to four in the sixth and four to six in the eighth.

Freshman Cam Tilly (2-0, 2.25) was a bright spot on the mound, earning his second win of the season with a season-high 4.0 innings pitched.

The Tigers continue the nine-game homestand with a double-midweek vs. Air Force (4-6) Tuesday at Wednesday at Plainsman Park—time TBA.

🔼 Penta Aggression. The offense came to play on Sunday as No. 25 Auburn softball (12-2-1) used a pair of home runs to walk off wins over North Texas and USC Upstate to conclude the Jane B. Moore Memorial.

Backed by a fourth consecutive shutout effort from Maddie Penta, Auburn topped North Texas 8-0. It was Penta's younger sister, Mariah Penta, who came through with a three-run home run to end the game in six innings. The Tigers had to come from behind to take down USC Upstate. With the game tied 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Makayla Packer knocked a grand slam to lift Auburn to an 8-4 win.

Makayla [Packer] was ready,” said head coach Mickey Dean. “She knew exactly what's going to happen there."

Auburn returns to the diamond on Tuesday for Taylor Swift Night at Jane B. Moore Field as the Tigers take on Troy in a midweek tilt. First pitch on the SEC Network+ is set for 5:30 p.m. CT.

🔼 A Win Over Vandy is Always Dandy. No. 12 Women's tennis had a dramatic finish against Vanderbilt in a 4-3 home win on Sunday afternoon. With the score tied at three, senior Ariana Arseneault won a close match over Anessa Lee to clinch the team win and begin the celebration on court two.

"We've done a really good job of adjusting the doubles teams and getting that doubles point, which is huge for momentum," Auburn head coach Lester Cook said after the win.

The win improves Auburn's record to 8-5 and a perfect 2-0 start to Southeastern Conference play.

The Tigers will get to stay at home for their next conference opponent, Missouri. The match will be played on Friday at 3 p.m. CT—live video and live scoring of the match will be available online at AuburnTigers.com.

🔼 Auburn Called, Kelly Listened. The son of a high school football coach in Ozark, Alabama, Auburn co-defensive coordinator Charles Kelly knew early on that his future would include a whistle and call sheets.

“Probably around fourth or fifth grade,” said Kelly, who has participated in preseason camps for a half-century. “He [Kelly’s dad] started letting me go to fall camp with him when I was 5 years old. I have not missed one since then, either as a player or a football coach. It’s in your blood.

“The one piece of advice he gave me before I got into coaching, he said, ‘If you don’t feel like you can live without it, then you need to coach.’”

Kelly followed his father’s advice, steadily ascending from high school to the SEC in a championship career that started on the Plains playing defensive back for Pat Dye’s Auburn Tigers from 1986-89.

“I have a lot of memories of this place. I was attracted to it at a young age. Growing up in this state, knowing the tradition when Coach Jordan was here.”

Read the feature for more on what Kelly has done before “coming home,” what makes Auburn special and his belief that this team can win championships.

🔼 Rebels No More. Auburn earned a 4-1 road win during its SEC opening match on Friday afternoon against Ole Miss. The Tigers won their first doubles point in four matches and carried that momentum into singles.

"The guys came out with a mission to right the ship on the doubles court," Auburn head coach Bobby Reynolds said after the match. "Glad to get out of Oxford with a win to start our SEC schedule."

The win improves Auburn's record to 8-4 while the loss evens the Rebels' record at 5-5.

The Tigers next take on UAB and Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday, March 5, at 10 a.m. CT and 1 p.m. CT, respectively.

🔼 Road Warriors. The No. 14 Auburn gymnastics team used strong performances on floor and beam to finish with a 196.9 at No. 20 Georgia Friday night. The Bulldogs took the meet with a 197.55 in front of their home crowd.

"We had some bright spots tonight with big performances in each rotation," head coach Jeff Graba said. "Being on the road in the SEC is never easy, and I thought the team did well in a tough environment."

Auburn scored a 49.35 on floor and a 49.325 on beam with a handful of solid scores from upperclassmen in the final rotations.

Auburn stays on the road, attending the 2024 Podium Challenge in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The Tigers will face No. 3 LSU along with Texas Women's and George Washington on March 8th at 6 p.m. CT. The podium meet will be held in the Raising Cane's River Center.

🔼 Neck and Neck. The No. 6 Auburn equestrian team fell to No. 3 SMU Saturday afternoon in a hard-fought, tightly-contested meet at the Auburn University Equestrian Center, 9-8.

"It was a tough loss today," head coach Jessica Braswell said. "I'm very proud of how our team rode. A big thank you to the Auburn fans who came out and supported us today."

Auburn concludes the regular season next weekend, hosting College of Charleston and nationally-ranked Texas A&M, March 8-9, at the Auburn University Equestrian Center.

The Tigers will take on College of Charleston on Friday, March 8, in a jumping seat-only contest beginning at 3 p.m. CT. Auburn and the Aggies will go head-to-head at 11 a.m. CT on March 9, and the Tigers will celebrate Senior Day.
