Bodda Getta Daily Brew 11/7: An Embarrassment of Riches

Another day, another accolade for Auburn hoops player Johni Broome.

Good morning. The preseason recognition continues for Auburn junior center/forward Johni Broome, as he was named one of 50 players on the preseason watch list for 2023-24 Jersey Mike's Naismith Trophy Men's Player of the Year.

Broome enters the season third among active NCAA Division I players with 46 career double-doubles, including 10 last season in his first year on The Plains.

Here’s Johnnie. Winning its home opener for the 44th time in the past 45 years, Auburn women’s basketball never trailed against Jacksonville State, beating the Gamecocks 78-49 Monday in Tipoff on The Plains at Neville Arena. The guidance from Coach J. is undeniably what makes Auburn women’s hoops so strong.

A trio of returners and a newcomer scored in double figures, with veterans Honesty Scott-Grayson (14), Kaitlyn Duhon (13) and Mar'shaun Bostic (12) combining for 39 points.

"I can run this team," Bostic said of her starting point guard role. "I'm supposed to be the one who runs the floor, the one who facilitates and plays hard on defense. A talk from Coach J really helped me build my confidence."

"I thought my kids played really hard," Auburn coach Johnnie Harris said. "I thought we started off well, and I thought we finished well. We're a work in progress with so many new pieces, but it's coming together."

Auburn outrebounded Jacksonville State 44-31 and outscored the Gamecocks 11-0 in second-chance points.

Auburn (1-0) will look to add another non-conference victory Thursday at 7 p.m. CT when the Tigers host Louisiana at Neville Arena.

Auburn Basketball Royalty. Marquis Daniels—whose career at Auburn included scoring 1,532 points with 208 steals, playing on two NCAA Tournament teams (including a run to the Sweet 16 in 2003) and averaging 23 points and seven rebounds during that March Madness—recently sat down to talk with the hosts of the Talking Tigers Podcast.

The current Director of Player Development for Auburn Men's Basketball, Daniels has dealt with more than his fair of hardships this past year. His wife, Shana Daniels, a former Auburn Women's Basketball player, died in June after a long battle with cancer. The Marquis and Shana Daniels Endowed Scholarship has been developed in Auburn's College of Education in her honor.

Daniels spent a decade in the NBA playing for Dallas, Indiana, Boston and Milwaukee, scoring over 4,300 points in the Association.

During the podcast, Daniels shares his wife’s legacy, how his family is doing, tales from the NBA and why Auburn is so special to him.

“Auburn has always embraced me,” Daniels said. “From the day I came in until now.”

🔼 Prodigy on the Plains. Nearly five years later, Auburn’s run to the Final Four is still paying dividends for the program. It was the first step in getting Aden Holloway to the Plains.

Holloway, an eighth grader at the time, took notice as the Tigers marched through the Blue Bloods of college basketball on their way to the first Final Four appearance in school history.

“Seeing them go through all those tough teams, game after game – Kansas, (North) Carolina, Kentucky – it was just like, ‘Wow,’” said Holloway. “That was an eye-opener.”

Holloway – now a freshman at Auburn – is expected to make his college basketball debut when the Tigers play No. 20 Baylor tonight in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at 6 p.m. CT.

“I don’t even know how to describe how excited I am,” he said. “I just can’t wait to play.”

The North Carolina native comes to Auburn as one of the more decorated signees in program history. A five-star recruit, he was ranked No. 21 overall in the Class of 2023 by ESPN, No. 27 overall by 247Sports and No. 33 overall by Rivals. He averaged 18.5 points, 5.1 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game as a senior last year to lead Prolific Prep (Napa, Calif.) to a No. 3 national ranking and a 36-1 record.

Here are some more Brew headlines to make your day ⏬

🔼 Net Worth. Auburn completed its fall tournament schedule on Sunday at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In the event that began on Friday, Billy Blaydes and Will Nolan won their doubles flight, while Raul Dobai qualified for the finals in his singles flight. In his Auburn debut, Nicholas Heng earned the first doubles win and first singles win of his collegiate career.

"This weekend's matches provided all the competitive opportunities we were looking for in our last fall tournament," said Auburn head coach Bobby Reynolds. "We had some success and some failures, but as a whole, we continued to try to implement areas in our individual development throughout the weekend without worrying about the result. This team has made some great progress in their game style that I know will pay dividends in the spring."

🔼 No Biloxi Blues. Auburn baseball wrapped up its fall exhibition schedule with a seven-inning doubleheader sweep of Louisiana Tech on Saturday in Biloxi, Mississippi.

The Tigers defeated the Bulldogs 5-0 in game one at MGM Park before posting a similar win of 5-1 in game two.

Auburn pitchers allowed just one run on four hits and struck out 17 batters while issuing just two walks in 14.0 innings. Offensively, the Tigers tallied seven extra-base hits, including five home runs that accounted for six of the team's 10 runs.

Read the rest of the article for the deets on Caden Green’s exciting homer to cap off the scoring in the first game, freshman pitcher Cam Tilly’s five strikeouts in game two, and more.

Auburn concludes its fall practice schedule with the annual Orange vs. Blue Fall World Series beginning Thursday, Nov. 9, at Plainsman Park.

🔼  Advantage Auburn. Women's tennis concluded its fall slate over the weekend on the home courts of the Yarbrough Tennis Center at the Auburn Invite, which was highlighted by a strong final day on Sunday.

"Really pleased with how we handled the areas within our control today," Auburn associate head coach Megan Falcon said on Sunday. "We are in control of how we respond to things that are outside our control. By the third day of a tournament, you're not always going to be physically feeling your best. Mental resilience is the differentiating factor. Grateful we could end our fall season on a high note at home."

Auburn players claimed both doubles matches, and five of the six singles matches played on Sunday to finish the tournament strong.
