Bodda Getta Daily Brew 5/23: All Hail, King Koivun

The freshman phenom leads Auburn at NCAA Championship

Good Morning, Auburn Family. When Jackson Koivun’s growth spurt didn’t match those of his peers, he dropped basketball and football and focused on golf.

“I decided golf was the best option,” Koivun said. “I was also probably a little better at golf than anything else.”

Koivun’s focus and dedication made him the American Junior Golf Association’s No. 1 recruit in the class of 2023, opening doors to his college of choice.

“He came to Auburn, and he saw the community, our town, and our facilities, and he fell in love with it,” Auburn coach Nick Clinard said.

In April, he won medalist honors at the SEC Championship, beating the runner-up by six strokes.

“I soaked it in for about 30 minutes and then realized we’ve got a new tournament to play and go win one for the team,” said Koivun.

Today, Koivun celebrates his 19th birthday. Tomorrow, he and the Tigers tee off in the first round at the Omni La Costa Champions Course, the final tournament in an epic freshman season.

🔼 In the Genes. Long before fifth-year senior Carolyn Ansari arrived on The Plains in the fall of 2019, she was destined for a life of tennis. Growing up in her hometown of Greensboro, North Carolina, she and all six of her siblings picked up the sport from a young age.

"I think my brother, Austin, really helped me,” Ansari said. “He helped me know what it's like to work hard, to have a goal and to go for it."

Austin Ansari later played tennis for four seasons at Clemson University from 2013-2016, but Carolyn decided to make her mark with a different set of Tigers further south.
