Bodda Getta Daily Brew 1/25: A Blip on the Basketball Radar

Despite an epic hardwood battle and Broome's 25 points, Alabama handed the Tigers their first SEC loss

Good morning. Johni Broome's double-double helped No. 8 Auburn erase a 14-point halftime deficit, but Alabama handed the Tigers their first SEC defeat 79-75 Wednesday at Coleman Coliseum, ending Auburn's 11-game win streak.

"We can compete on the road in a tough environment against a really good team," Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said. "This may not be the outcome we wanted, but this is an outcome that tells me something."

Broome led Auburn with 25 points, 14 rebounds and five blocked shots. The Tigers remain tied for the SEC lead with Alabama, while Tennessee is a half-game back.

Auburn (16-3, 5-1) remains on the road this weekend, traveling to Starkville on Saturday to play Mississippi State at 2:30 p.m. CT on SEC Network and the Auburn Sports Network.

🔼 Two Ps in a Pod. After turning in All-Southeastern Conference performances a season ago, senior pitcher Maddie Penta and junior shortstop Nelia Peralta were honored as Preseason All-SEC selections, while Auburn softball was selected to finish fifth, following a vote by the league's 13 head coaches.

The reigning SEC Pitcher of the Year and NFCA First Team All-American, Penta returns for her final season in an Auburn uniform. The right-hander from Chesapeake City, Maryland, led the SEC in wins last season with 27, tying the program's single-season record.

Auburn's most consistent hitter a season ago, Peralta started every game at shortstop for the Tigers in 2023. A staple at the top of the lineup, the Wellington, Florida, native led the team with a .329 batting average, 39 runs scored and 54 hits.

🔼 It’s Absolute Maddie-ness. It’s Maddie Penta’s world, and we’re all just living in it. On top of the preseason SEC recognition, Auburn ace Maddie Penta has been chosen as one of 50 student-athletes selected to the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Watch List for the second consecutive year.

The reigning Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Year and All-American was one of 21 SEC athletes to earn a spot on the initial watch list.  Penta was a top 25 finalist for the award a season ago.

🔼 Go For Gogul. We're less than two weeks away from the start of the spring Auburn Equestrian season, and we're getting to know our newcomers—this week is Reilly Gogul.

Hometown: Covington, Kentucky
Discipline: Jumping Seat
Prior to Auburn: Go here for her many pre-Auburn accolades

Some Quick Hits on Reilly Gogul:

Why Auburn? "When I got on campus for the first time, it just felt like the right place, and that feeling carried through when I met the team for the first time."
Favorite memory with the team so far? "Probably our breakdown at the first meet of the season. It was a home meet, and we were all so excited and anxious to get going, and the energy was so high.”
When did you start riding? "I grew up riding horses. Both my parents were professionals and had a business together, so I was at the barn pretty much every day when I was a kid. I tried some other sports like soccer and tennis, but in the end, nothing compared to riding."
Biggest lesson so far? "I've learned a lot about what it means to be a teammate. Our sport is almost entirely individual in the professional industry, so this was my first experience ever being on an equestrian team, and it taught me a lot about small sacrifices and how I can lift people up."
